Dandruff typically looks like dry, fine peeling skin mostly on the scalp, sometimes with areas of pink or red irritated skin. Fortunately, dandruff is harmless and can always be controlled, often with simple over-the-counter remedies. Dandruff is a very common skin condition that many people experience at some point in their lives regardless of ethnicity or age.
However, dandruff not only affects the scalp but also ears, eyebrows, sides of the nose and part of the chest. Although it is not curable, it is generally quite easily controlled with proper skin and hair hygiene. Severe dandruff may be a very difficult and frustrating condition.
Unfortunately, there is no exact cause of dandruff. However, some scientists believe it can be caused by an overproduction of skin oil (sebum) in the oil glands and hair follicles. However, the flakes associated with dandruff sometimes can be caused by conditions other than overproduction of skin oil, including:
- shampooing too often or not often enough
- dry skin, such as the kind caused by cold, dry winter air
- using hair-care products or hair dye that leave a dry, flaky residue or having a bad reaction to these products
- other skin conditions like eczema, acne, or psoriasis that can cause dead skin cells to build up on the scalp
Normally, the first symptoms someone with dandruff will notice are white flakes of dead skin in the hair or on the shoulders. The scalp may also become itchy and scaly. Mild redness in the affected area might also be noticed as well.
Use of a Coconut
Researchers believe Coconut oil helps eliminate dandruff due to its antifungal properties. It has a character of moisturizing dry scalp and provides relief from itching.
Here is the procedure
- Take some coconut oil and mix half the amount of lemon juice in it.
- Rub it on your scalp and massage for a few minutes.
- Wash your hair after at least 20 minutes.
- Follow this remedy two to three times a week.
Use of Olive Oil
Scalp dryness can be cured with regular use of extra-virgin olive oil, an effective moisturizer Heat some extra virgin olive oil until it is slightly warm.
- Massage it onto your scalp and then wrap your hair in a warm towel.
- Leave it on for at least 45 minutes or overnight and then shampoo and condition your hair.
- Repeat this remedy a few times a week.
Use of lemon juice
Lemon juice contains acids that fight the fungi that can cause dandruff. It also helps relieve itching on the scalp
- Mix the juice of half a lemon in one-quarter cup of plain yogurt. Apply it on your hair and scalp. Leave it on for about 20 minutes before rinsing it off and shampooing your hair.
- Alternatively, you can simply massage your scalp with a few teaspoons of lemon juice mixed with a little water. Leave it on for 5 minutes before rinsing it out and shampooing your hair.
Basically, dandruff are nothing to be scared about, just maintain hair hygiene.
